The Centre SÈVE is composed of a group of researchers from Quebec from various disciplines having a common interest in research in plant science and plant production in the agricultural and horticultural fields, as well as in the production of plant-derived products (pharmaceuticals, food additives, etc.) and ecosystem products. The Centre SÈVE, through the research carried out by its members, helps support the agriculture sector in Quebec and other economic sectors such as natural resources and biotechnologies.
Research in plant-related sciences is crucial in a context where multiple challenges must be addressed, such as climate change, increasing food insecurity, and restricted and degraded areas for agricultural production. As such, the Centre SÈVE’s research priorities are in line with the strategic plan established by the Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ) in term of agriculture and food. In addition, researchers at the Centre SÈVE are developing new technologies to add value to plant products and to produce new products and services.
The Centre SÈVE promotes research by awarding seed money grants to catalyze new collaborations between members, as well as by supporting human and physical infrastructure to promote access to cutting-edge technology. The Centre SÈVE offers training and assistance to students to access career-building activities, contributing to the development of the next generation of scientists. In addition, projects with the public and with college institutions have enabled the transmission of knowledge. Finally, the Centre SÈVE and its members have established international collaborations that have highlighted the contributions to plant science research carried out in Quebec.
